Through Script Mechanics and the CinemaSpoke Screenwriting Contest, we at LightHeart Entertainment & Media have been staging free table reads of scripts by screenwriters for many years. While we primarily serve the St. Louis bi-state region, many screenwriters come from Los Angeles, Kansas City, Chicago, and even Mexico for one of our table reads! Recently, a South Carolina screenwriter drove for hours through a snowstorm to get to St. Louis for his table read.
We read scripts in the earliest stages to ones about to shot. All we ask is that the scripts are properly formatted and that you bring copies for the table reading, which is usually 6-10 copies. We share scripts to minimize copies and provide the professional actors, actresses, filmmakers, and writers who read the script’s parts aloud and provide feedback to the screenwriter(s).
After a narrator and the actors assigned the parts read the script aloud, we discuss the script in detail. The open discussion of script, story, characters, plot, themes, and settings will pinpoint both what isn’t working and what is working in the script. Many ideas and suggestions will be provided, and, of course, the screenwriter(s) will have to figure out what works for the script.
Our professional readers often follow up afterward with additional thought and ideas for the screenwriters because we care and want your script to be the best.
Our table read notes and analysis come without any strings attached. We just want the screenwriters to have an opportunity to improve their scripts and have a better chance to sell their script and/or make the best film possible. What started as a local service aimed at developing local St. Louis talent has become an internationally-known resource for screenwriters and filmmakers.

Mary Cox is A Film Critic for Advantage News, WBGZ, and cinemachatter.com. She is Also a Screenwriter. We Love Your Work and Look Forward to Working with You on the 4 Films Project!
I completed my Ph.D. with an emphasis in Film Studies at Saint Louis University in the fall of 2016 and hold a BA in Film from Columbia College in Chicago. My Ph.D. dissertation analyzed the business practices of the Motion Picture Industry’s studio era, and I am reworking it for general publication. As an adjunct professor, I teach film studies and production classes, including screenwriting, at several St. Louis area colleges and universities.
I have been a film critic for more twenty-five years and was the managing editor and a reviewer for the video release magazine VCR News and Reviews and the syndicate Film Previews Limited (1990 - 2001). Currently, my film reviews are published in The Independent News, on its websites and social media, in its virtual edition, and occasionally on The Cinematic Skinny, Script Mechanics, CinemaSpoke, and LightHeart Entertainment & Media Facebook pages and groups and on HEC-TV’s blog and magazine. I am a member of the Alliance of Women Film Journalists.
I worked with Ken Rotcop through his screenwriting seminars and Pitchmarts® and have completed several screenplays which my LA-based agent, Lloyd Robinson, represents. I work independently or with cowriter Renee Riffle on other writing projects and have made several award-winning short films and am working on several film projects and documentaries as a producer. In 2018, I was nominated for a regional Emmy.
A co-founder of Script Mechanics, a screenwriting workshop, which sponsors the CinemaSpoke Screenwriting Contest, I work directly with screenwriters to improve their screenplays and to hone their skills while nurturing their storytelling and refining their screenplays.
I am active in the local St. Louis film community. After covering the St. Louis International Film Festival for many years, I joined the festival’s Interfaith Jury more than ten years ago and serves on a variety of the juries for local film festivals. As a co-founder of the St. Louis Film Critics Association, I served as the first Director and subsequently as the Assistant Director. I also served on the Board of Directors of the Media Communications Association’s St. Louis Chapter, for which I held the office of president twice, and served on Board of Directors of Missouri Motion Media Association.
Currently, I am a founding partner in LightHeart Entertainment & Media, LLC, and I develop the company’s projects while managing the Limited Liability Corporation with my business partner Renee Riffle. The company has plans to market novelty items, produce short films, and expand into a non-profit educational arm which works with improving opportunities for the artistic community. I also work as a freelance television producer and film and video editor.
